Variegated Umbrella Plant Care Guide

Variegated Umbrella Plant Care Guide

Jul 14, 2026

The Variegated Umbrella Plant is a bold, architectural houseplant with glossy, hand-shaped leaves splashed in rich green and creamy yellow. It gets its common name from the way leaflets radiate outward from a central stem — like the spokes of an umbrella. Fast-growing and adaptable, it's a fantastic statement plant for bright corners, living rooms, or office spaces. Browse our full houseplant collection to pair it with complementary plants for a lush, layered look.

Light

Bright, indirect light is where the Variegated Umbrella Plant truly thrives — the more light it gets, the more vivid its yellow-and-green variegation stays. A spot near a south- or east-facing window (with a sheer curtain to diffuse harsh rays) is ideal. It will adapt to lower light, but the variegation will fade toward solid green and growth will slow significantly. Rotate the pot every few weeks for even, balanced growth.

Watering

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry — roughly every 7–10 days in spring and summer, and less frequently in fall and winter. Always water deeply and allow it to drain fully. Never let it sit in standing water, as Schefflera is prone to root rot. A well-draining planter with a saucer makes keeping on top of this simple.

Humidity & Temperature

This tropical plant appreciates humidity above 50% but tolerates average household conditions reasonably well. It prefers temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C). Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning — sudden temperature drops are its biggest enemy indoors.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, rich potting mix with added perlite for aeration. Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots begin to circle the base or escape drainage holes. The Umbrella Plant can grow quite large — be prepared to size up the pot as it matures.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer. Our Houseplant Fertilizer Tablets dissolve slowly and take the guesswork out of feeding. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter. Over-fertilizing can cause leggy growth and brown leaf tips, so stick to the recommended amount.

Propagation

Take stem cuttings 4–6 inches long, remove the lower leaves, and place in water or moist soil. Keep in a warm, bright spot and roots should develop within 3–5 weeks.

Common Issues

  • Leaf drop — usually caused by a sudden change in light, temperature, or overwatering. Find a stable spot and stick to a consistent watering routine.
  • Fading variegation — move to a brighter location.
  • Leggy growth — prune back with pruning shears to encourage bushier growth. Cuttings can be propagated!
  • Pests — spider mites and mealybugs are common. Treat immediately with our Organic Houseplant Care Spray.

Final Tips

The Variegated Umbrella Plant can be trained up a moss pole for a dramatic, tree-like look, or pruned into a compact shrub shape. Note that it is toxic to pets and children, so keep it out of reach. Pair it with a Plant Care Kit to keep it looking its best year-round.
