What Is the Aglaonema Dazzling Gem?
The Aglaonema (ah-glah-oh-NEE-mah), also called Chinese Evergreen, is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. The Dazzling Gem variety is known for its striking pink-veined, variegated foliage; no two leaves are exactly alike.
It’s a slow-to-moderate grower that stays compact and manageable, making it perfect for shelves, desks, side tables, or as a statement plant in any room.
Light Requirements
The Aglaonema Dazzling Gem is adaptable when it comes to light, but it does have preferences:
- Best: Bright indirect light — near a window with filtered light
- Tolerates: Medium indirect light
- Avoid: Direct harsh sunlight (it can scorch the leaves) and very low light (the variegation will fade)
Pro tip: The more pink in the leaves, the more light it wants. If your Dazzling Gem is losing its pink coloring, it likely needs a brighter spot.
Watering
Aglaonemas like to be watered consistently but not excessively. Think: moist but never soggy.
- Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry.
- In summer, this is typically every 7–10 days.
- In winter, reduce watering to every 2–3 weeks.
- Always water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer.

Fertilizing

Do not fertilize in fall or winter when the plant is resting.
Soil & Repotting
Aglaonemas prefer well-draining soil that holds some moisture without becoming waterlogged. Our Botanical Bar plant soil is formulated specifically for tropical houseplants and works beautifully for Aglaonemas.
Repot every 1–2 years in spring when you notice roots coming out of the drainage holes. Go up just one pot size to avoid overwatering issues.
Common Issues & How to Fix Them
Yellow leaves: Usually overwatering. Let the soil dry out more between waterings.
Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or fluoride in tap water. Try using filtered water or letting tap water sit overnight before using it.
Fading pink color: Not enough light. Move to a brighter spot with more indirect light.
Pests: Aglaonemas can occasionally attract spider mites or mealybugs. Wipe leaves down weekly with our Organic Leaf Care Spray to prevent and treat.
