Heartleaf Philodendron Care Guide

Heartleaf Philodendron Care Guide

Jun 02, 2026
If you’ve been looking for a plant that’s equal parts beautiful and forgiving, meet the Heartleaf Philodendron, one of our all-time favorites at The Botanical Bar. With its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and trailing vines, this plant brings life to any corner of your home without demanding much in return. It’s the kind of plant that makes you feel like a plant parent pro, even if you’re just getting started.

Why We Love It

The Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) is a fast-growing tropical plant that thrives indoors. It looks great in hanging baskets or trailing off shelves and reliably signals its needs. Once you learn its signs, you'll keep it thriving for years.

Light

Bright, indirect light is best—near a window with a sheer curtain or a few feet from a south- or east-facing window. The Heartleaf Philodendron adapts to various light levels and tolerates lower light better than most, though growth may slow and leaves may shrink.

Avoid direct sun; it will scorch those gorgeous leaves.

Water

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. If still damp, wait a few days. Overwatering is the most common mistake, so when unsure, delay watering. During warm months, water weekly. In winter, reduce to every 10–14 days. Always use a pot with drainage so roots stay dry. Signs you’re overwatering: yellowing leaves, mushy stems. Signs you’re underwatering: drooping, dry, curling leaves.

Soil

This is where we come in: the Heartleaf Philodendron does best in a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix. Our organic potting mix for indoor plants — available in the shop and online — is formulated to provide the right balance of aeration and moisture retention that tropical plants like the Philodendron need to thrive.
Avoid dense, compacted soils that hold too much water.

Humidity & Temperature

Being a tropical plant, the Heartleaf Philodendron loves humidity. It’s perfectly happy in most homes. It will truly thrive if you:
  • Mist the leaves occasionally.
  • Place it near a humidifier.
  • Group it with other plants (they create their own little humidity bubble!)
Keep it in temperatures between 65–85°F. Keep it away from cold drafts, AC vents, and heating units.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter. Growth naturally slows in these seasons.

Repotting

Repot every 1–2 years. Repot when you notice roots emerging from the drainage holes. Go up one pot size at a time. If the pot is too large, it can lead to overwatering issues. Spring is the best time to repot.

Common Issues

Problem Likely Cause Fix
Yellow leaves Overwatering Let soil dry out more between waterings
Brown tips Low humidity or fluoride in tap water Mist more, or switch to filtered water
Leggy growth Not enough light Move closer to a light source
Drooping Underwatering Give it a good drink

It Pet Safe?

The Heartleaf Philodendron is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep it out of reach of curious pets.
