The Ponytail Palm, or Beaucarnea Recurvata, is a tropical plant native to Mexico. Oddly enough, a Ponytail Palm Tree is neither a palm nor a tree. It is a member of the Agave family and is a Succulent. Other common names for this plant include the Bottle Palm Tree or the Elephant Foot Tree. It's a perfect plant for new plant parents and world travelers, as it's low maintenance. This plant thrives in a spot that regularly receives bright light. Unusual in its shape, the pony can often grow to over 2 stories in height and, when found in groups, often makes a scene out of a Dr. Seuss book with its large elephant foot, tall skinny stalk, and tuft of wiry hair at the top.

Sun

Bright direct to medium indirect light, avoid windows as they amplify the sun's intensity and may create heat that may damage plant.

Water

Water every 1-2 weeks and allow excess water to run out the drainage holes in the nursery pot or whichever vessel you transplant into. If your pot has no drainage holes, we recommend adding clay drainage balls to the bottom of the pot, however, avoid overwatering.

Pro-Tip

As with most succulents, your Ponytail Palm will thrive in dry conditions. The drier the air, the better!

The Ponytail Palm is non-toxic to humans and animals.

Basic Plant Care 

We recommend transplanting within 1 year into a vessel 1-2 inches larger using regular potting mix. Clean leaves with damp paper towel every 1-2 weeks to aid photosynthesis and stimulate growth. Check leaves and stalks for pests while cleaning. If pests are found, remove with damp paper towel and use a mild organic pesticide in a spray bottle to coat the affected areas.
