When the temperatures rise, your houseplants feel it too. Just like people, plants need extra care during a heatwave. Here are five simple tips to keep your indoor plants healthy when it's hot:
1. Move Them Out of Direct Sunlight
Bright, indirect light is ideal. If your plants sit in a sunny window, especially one that faces south, move them back a few feet or use sheer curtains to filter the light.
2. Water Smart, Not More
Check the soil daily. Only water when the top inch feels dry. Use room temperature water and aim to water in the morning to reduce evaporation.
3. Increase Humidity
Hot weather often dries out indoor air. Mist your plants, group them together to create a microclimate, or place a small humidifier nearby.
4. Improve Air Circulation
Keep air flowing by using a fan on a low setting. Just don’t place plants directly in front of vents or cold air drafts from air conditioning.
5. Skip Fertilizing and Repotting
Avoid stressing your plants even more. Wait until temperatures return to normal before fertilizing or moving them to new pots.
